How to Choose Nipple Pasties: Size, Shape and Staying Power

Most pasty guides tell you to "express yourself" and leave it there. Useful if you already know what you're doing. Less useful if you're standing in front of a checkout page wondering whether a 2-inch heart is going to look right, stay on, or cover what you need it to cover.

So here's the practical version: how to pick a size, how to pick a shape, and how to make sure they're still on at 3am.

Start with size — it's the part most brands skip

This is the step almost nobody talks about, because most pasties are sold one-size-fits-all. One size does not fit all. It's the single most common reason pasties gap, peel at the edge, or sit awkwardly.

Measure your areola, not your breast

Your cup size is irrelevant here. What matters is the diameter of your areola — the pigmented area around the nipple. Two people with very different bust sizes can need the same pasty, and two people with the same bust size can need completely different ones.

Measure straight across at the widest point.

Areola diameter Size
1" – 1.5" Small
1.5" – 2" Medium
2" – 3" Large

No tape measure? Use a quarter

A US quarter is 0.955" across — just under an inch. Hold one against your areola. If the quarter is noticeably bigger, you're a Small. If it's about the same or slightly smaller, you're in Small-to-Medium territory. If your areola is meaningfully wider than the coin, size up from there.

Right on the line between two sizes? Size up

Extra coverage is more forgiving than coming up short. A pasty that's slightly larger than it needs to be still sits flat and still looks intentional. A pasty that's slightly too small has a visible edge in exactly the place you don't want one, and it's the first thing to lift when you sweat.

One more thing worth knowing

At Ravesties, every size costs the same. Small, Medium and Large are all $12. That's not standard in this category — it's common to be charged 60% more for a larger size, usually sold as a separate product rather than a size you can just click. We think charging more for a bigger body is a strange thing to do, so we don't.

Then pick your shape

Once size is settled, shape is the fun part. A few things worth thinking about:

Coverage isn't the same as size

A star and a circle with the same overall width don't cover the same area — the star has points, and the gaps between them are gaps. If you want maximum coverage, solid shapes like hearts and circles do more work than pointed ones. If you want a graphic look and coverage is secondary, stars and icons are where to go.

Shape families

  • Hearts — the most-worn shape we make, in classic, drip and devil variants. Goes with everything, reads as intentional in any context.
  • X / Cross — the graphic, slightly harder-edged option. Strong under mesh.
  • Stars & Icons — stars, snowflakes, clovers and more. The most costume-friendly family.
  • Card Suits — hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs. Works as a set or mixed left and right.

Colour: think about the lighting you'll be in

This matters more than people expect. Holographic and iridescent finishes come alive under moving stage lighting and do very little in daylight. Neon reads loudest under blacklight. Black and Volcano Red hold up in any lighting, which is why they're the two most-chosen colours. If you're picking for a specific event, picture the room.

Make sure they actually stay on

The best-looking pasty in the world is useless if it's in your hand by the second set. Adhesive does most of the work, but application does the rest.

Skin prep is 90% of it

Apply to clean, dry skin. No lotion, no oil, no body glitter underneath — anything that leaves a film between the adhesive and your skin will cut wear time dramatically. If you've moisturised, give it time to absorb fully, or wipe the area first.

Press and hold

Smooth from the centre outward and hold for 30 seconds. Body heat helps the adhesive bond. Don't keep peeling them off to reposition — every lift costs you tack.

What you're getting

Ours use a medical-grade, latex-free adhesive rated for 8–12 hours of wear. Sweatproof and waterproof, which in practice means a hot tent at 2am is not the problem people assume it is.

Single use, on purpose

Ours are single use. That's a deliberate choice, not a limitation: fresh adhesive every time is exactly what keeps them stuck for a full night and keeps your skin happy. Re-worn adhesive picks up skin cells, fabric fibres and product residue, and it loses grip fast — usually right when you're furthest from anywhere you can fix it.

Buying for a multi-day festival

Plan one pair per day, plus a spare. Since they're single use, running out on day three is a real thing that happens. Bundles are the easiest way to cover a whole weekend without thinking about it, and mixing shapes across days is more fun than repeating one look.

The short version

  1. Measure your areola. Use a quarter if you don't have a tape measure.
  2. Between sizes? Size up.
  3. Pick a shape based on how much coverage you want, not just how it looks flat.
  4. Pick a colour for the lighting you'll actually be standing in.
  5. Clean dry skin, press 30 seconds, fresh pair each time.
